Smartwatches are the ultimate companion on our wrist, but they are only as good as their battery life. Learn the core principles of AMOLED watch face design.
The OLED Advantage
OLED displays differ fundamentally from traditional LCDs:
- Per-Pixel Lighting: Every pixel on an OLED display emits its own light.
- True Blacks: To display pure black (#000000), the pixel is turned completely off, drawing zero power.
- Active Pixel Ratio (APR): The percentage of pixels that are illuminated on the screen.
Designing for Low APR
To save power, a custom watch face should limit APR in both normal and ambient (always-on) modes.
- AMOLED-Black Backgrounds: Use true blacks rather than dark greys.
- Thin Font Weights: Opt for high-readability thin sans-serif typography.
- Selective Complications: Complications should be compact and clean.
By following these design guidelines, Galaxy Design watch faces maintain premium swiss horology aesthetics while ensuring all-day performance.
